Trouble In Eastleigh Again: Time Bomb Is Still Ticking

Two days ago, residents of Eastleigh in Nairobi were involved in running battles with the police for the better part of the day.

Trouble started when residents got fed up with the failure by the City Council to clear garbage that had piled up in a certain area of the expansive estate, so they decided to protest by placing piles of it on the road. The riot police were quickly called in to clear the roads.

Eastliegh is mostly occupied by Somali refugees from a neighboring country that has been at war for decades. Most of these foreigners have been able to effectively pose as Kenyans easily acquiring the national ID and are expected to influence the outcome of the coming general elections in that constituency (Kamukunji). It is no accident that this part of town has been christened Mogadishu (after the capital of war-torn Somalia).

The fact that most of those involved in the protest were foreigners is clearly evident in the fact that Kenyans have always drowned in garbage without seeing the need to riot because of it. This is a terrible thing to say, but it is the truth. It seems that the attitude has been that we have so many other problems that overflowing garbage is the least of them.

Part of the reason that trouble has been triggered off just now is the fact that our Muslim brothers are going through their holy month of Ramadhan and it is reported that the stinking garbage heap was close to a mosque.

Residents complain that they have pleaded with the city council many times to get rid of the eye sore and health hazard but their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
