Direction Of Luhya Vote Could Decide Elections

The Luhya community have spoken in one voice and have sent a chilling message to Raila Odinga's ODM. Nominate Musalia Mudvadi as the ODM presidential candidate or the community will have to rethink where to pour their support.

Why such cockiness? And why now?

Unknown to most Kenyans, those who do tribal arithmetic regularly are now saying that the current sums minus the Luhya community put president Kibaki and Raila Odinga on a head to head level with no clear winner and it is in fact too close to call.

For all intents and purposes, it seems highly unlikely that ODM-Kenya, Kalonzo Musyoka and his Kamba community (the 5th largest community according to Moi's highly suspect census figures) will team up with the original ODM. In fact Mr Musyoka has really been warming up to Kanu in recent weeks. This is in fact a great loss to ODM, although there are those analysts who insist that it was obvious that Kalonzo was not going to remain in ODM and that it is equally obvious that Raila Odinga will be the ODM candidate for president short of which his own supporters could easily lynch him if he suggests anything less. One can't help wondering what will happen if Raila loses the presidential elections to President Kibaki or another candidate.

This development has suddenly made it crucial for both leading candidates to ensure that they get the Luhya vote. It is no accident that President Kibaki recently toured Western Kenya—the geographical habitation of the Luhya. Raila's strategists are also said to be burning the midnight oil looking for ways and means to clinch the Luhya vote.

Actually I is also important to note that getting the entire Luhya vote as a block is impossible because even if Musalia were to be declared the presidential candidate today, it is highly unlikely that Musikari Kombo's Bukusu will vote for him. That is how explosive Luhya politics is. And that is why it is easier to understand it all when you realize that there is no such tribe as the Luhya tribe. This was simply the administrative name coined by the colonialists to describe the numerous different tribes that they had grouped together for administrative purposes. True there are many similarities between the tribes, but there are also many irreconcilable differences.

Kenyan Presidency Was Not Supposed To Cross River Chania, But God...

"I can already see myself inspecting a guard of honor."

Those were the words of a man who never became president but deeply desired to become the occupant of State House. They were confidently spoken in the mid seventies as President Kenyatta's health detiorated as he drifted in and out of frequent comas. The man who spoke those words is still alive today and his name is Njoroge Mungai. The medical doctor who was so ambitious that legend has it that he one day asked the aging president to declare him heir apparent, was also a nephew to founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

In any event by the time Kenyatta died in 1978, peacefully in his sleep, it looked like nothing could stop another Kiambu Kikuyu ascending to the presidency and that is exactly how the authoritative Time magazine analyzed it. Even when Moi took over in n acting capacity, most analysts agreed he was simply a passing cloud.

In fact in the mid 70s an oath had been taken amongst those close to president Kenyatta declaring that the presidency would never cross River Chania. Crossing River Chania would mean that the presidency would pass on to a kikuyu from Nyeri.

Then things started happening. Charles Njonjo, himself highly ambitious and after the presidency played his political cards well and red-carded the powerful Njoroge Mingai to political oblivion. Njonjo himself was later red-carded by Moi's kitchen cabinet led by the likes of Nicholas Biwott. The other powerful figure, Mbiyu Koinange died shortly after President Kenyatta died.

But even stranger was the fact that Kenyatta happened to die on one of the very few evenings when Mbiyu Koinange was NOT at his side. He had traveled to Nairobi a few hours before the president's death to take care of family business.

The Presidency actually crossed the River Chania in December 2002 when Mwai Kibaki was elected.

Why Was Raila Odinga Thrown Out Of A Nyeri Hotel?

Presidential hopeful Raila Odinga was in Nyeri yesterday for the funeral of an LDP official in the district. Two memorable incidents took place.

Firstly here was a skirmish at the funeral when a local in the area was interrupted by rowdy youths as he tried to criticize President Kibaki's administration. Things were so serious that the "speech" had to be cut short. It is not clear why details of this incident are so scanty in the local media.

But there was more drama to follow when Raila was ejected from a Nyeri Hotel because the "owner wanted nothing to do with ODM."

Both these incidents display the height of political immaturity in the country, although critics would be quick to point out that anybody critical of Raila Odinga would face more or less the same treatment in Kisumu, the bedrock of this presidential candidate's support.

This is clear evidence that the wounds between these two leading tribes in Kenya have never been addresses, let alone any attempt made to heal them. Instead every time I bring up the subject here I am accused of being a tribalist pushing forward a tribal agenda.

Alas, Kenyans for now (read those in power and their agents who pollute this blog in large numbers) prefer to bury their head in the sand and pretend that there is no problem and whoever brings up the subject is a tribalist. So be it.

The First Media Bill Was Just Testing The Waters… Prepare Yourselves For "Pravda" In Kenya

Draconian CCK Bill Gives Authority Power To Decide What Gets Covered

The closer election day gets, the more I think that there is somebody within the president's campaign team deliberately doing everything to reduce the chances of the president being re-elected for a second term.

One of the favorite tools this traitor is using is provoking the media.

I say this because even as the President keeps everybody in suspense over the Media Bill that remains unsigned, yet another bill that will affect the operation of the media in Kenya is due for discussion in parliament soon.

I am convinced that the reason why Kenyans have been left hanging over the fate of the Media bill, which has already been passed by parliament is because powerful forces around the president are still pushing hard for him to sign it into law. Chances are high that he will do just that.

Significant proposals in the new proposed law soon to be tabled in the house include a clause that allows the minister in charge of internal security to raid any media house and to take away equipment. Most Kenyans have failed to see the government's position concerning the infamous raid on Standard newspapers where newspapers were set on fire.

=========================================

=========================================

This little clause speaks louder than any government statement or denial crafted by the powerless government spin doctor, Alfred Mutua which are often meaningless. For instance the government says in a statement that they are sensitive to the plight of the common man and then in another statement suddenly bans plastic bags and even worse increases the tax on the plastic bags it leaves in the market. The sum result is a price hike of many basic commodities. Kenyans brace yourself for the October price shock, which has already started happening (have you been to the shops recently to purchase basics like Rice?)

The clause in the proposed CCK bill clearly tells Kenyans that the Kibaki administration has no iota of remorse over the brutal and illegal raid carried out on the Standard newspapers last year, so much so that they now want to legalize the whole process.

It has greatly simplified the choices for Kenyans in the coming general elections. It is now abundantly clear that a vote for Kibaki Abaki is a vote in support of a suppressed media or a vote for no free media at all. It is clearly a vote for Pravda-like media in Kenya. Pravda was the official government newspaper in communist Russia. It is really that simple.

The Kibaki government has been consistent in very few things. But the one thing they have been extremely consistent in doing is reigning in the free media. It started with the Standard raid and moved on to a effort to control the media which culminated in the Media Bill, which the president would just love to sign against his better judgement and is now extended to the pending Communications Commission Of Kenya Amendment Bill and probably many others that will proposed in Kibaki's second term, if Kenyans give him that term.

Many of us do not understand just how difficult it is for our local media to operate. Admittedly this is one of the reasons why this blog is so popular because we can publish things here that the media cannot touch. I also have the huge advantage of operating exclusively on the World Wide Web where informants with ver hot information are numerous, as opposed to a media that is still in control of conservatives who are just now beginning to grasp the power of the web. This is not a black mark against them because even the government itself has not fully grasped the implications of the web, more so what is bound to happen as they continue to pass draconian bills against press freedom.

The truth is that Kenyans are becoming more and more reliant on non-traditional mediums for their information and while it is true that the Internet by itself still does not reach enough Kenyans, when you combine it with word of mouth and the mobile phone, the effect and impact of blogs like this one multiplies many times over.

Mugambi Imanyara: The Mysterious Lawyer Who Registered ODM Original

The scene was one straight out of some action movie.

Some carjackers attempted approached lawyer Mugambi Imanyara and instead of surrendering his car in the Karen area, what ensued was a fierce gun battle that finally saw the thugs retreating. The incident was reported in the back page of the Daily Nation and many Kenyans admired the bravery of this guy single handedly fighting back against crime.

But until recently Kenyans had not connecting that gun battle incident and the individual involved to the man who registered the Orange Democratic Party and forced the real ODM players to register ODM-Kenya. The man whom it is rumoured was offered Kshs 80 million to surrender the party to Raila Odinga and company.

But even more interesting is the fact that the man turned up for the handing over ceremony whilst armed with a gun. It was clearly sticking out of his back belt for all to see.

The many clues from his life paint the picture of a very shady character, the sort of man you would panic if left alone with in a room. Incidentally this is the same man who registered New Kanu the party that Hon Nicholas Biwott used in his epic battles against Kanu chairman Uhuru Kenyatta.

In an interview with the Sunday Nation, Mr Imanyara confessed to having had several "secret" meetings with Raila Odinga aides and with Raila himself before releasing the party to them. Why so many meetings if it is indeed true that he handed over the party for free, out of his sudden realization of who the true owners of ODM were?

Then there is the fact that Mr Imanyara recently accepted a government appointment to the Electricity Regulatory Authority not to mention that he is a well know supporter and campaigner for energy minister Kiraitu Murungi after he recently changed his mind not to contest the South Imenti seat himself and instead opted to support the incumbent legislator Kiraitu Murungi.

Registrar Went Into Hiding Fearing Raila Demo

Why is the government aiding "political entrepreneurs" to make money?

Sources close to the registrar have revealed that the registrar had already gone into hiding anticipating yet another ugly demonstration and she only emerged when it was announced that Raila Odinga had gained control of the original Orange Democratic Party.

This confirms that her instructions NOT to register any new political parties still stands.

Has it occurred to anybody that this decision enables all those opportunists who registered political parties to make money to successful accomplish the ludicrous mission they set out to do. Is somebody in government earning a hefty commission from the deal? Why else would the government deny Kenyans the democratic right by halting the registration of new political parties in an election year?

Many of these "political entrepreneurs" would have been frustrated if politicians who wanted to stand were able to quickly register their own political parties.

It is interesting that going to 44 years after independence a law that was put in place many to control political opposition is still in place. Namely the law that leaves no space for independent candidates. This was part of the popular amendments to the constitution that were contained in the Ghai draft. It appears that the minimum reforms will never happen but this would have been one of the laws that should have been revised to put out of business the numerous political parties registered with monetary gain in mind. Lawyer Mugambi Imanyara has certainly given Kenyans many political money making ideas.

Is Equity In Financial Problems As The Emails Suggest?

If you believed half of what you read in the emails that have been circulating about Equity Bank you would be expecting the bank to collapse at any time.

Based on the information I have managed to gather this is NOT true.

There are two main things that can cause a bank to go down. Firstly not being able to generate enough revenue and secondly non-performing loans in its' books. Equity suffers none of these two. Interestingly, according to confidential information that I was able to see, almost all the loans the bank gives are very small amounts to individuals and small business people. Meaning that even if some of them were to go bad, it would hardly leave a dent.

But the thing that shocked even me, was the revenue generation happening at the bank. WOW!! Let me simplify it so that everybody can understand.

Equity bank now has 1.4 million account holders. Any seasoned entrepreneur will tell you that when you have critical mass in numbers like these you can hardly go wrong.

Every time those 1.4 millions folks breathe, Equity makes money. Somebody makes a withdrawal and the Equity profits cash till rings. Some of them take short-term loans and again that means money pouring into the bank coffers (the bank still makes vast amounts of its profits from these small short term loans). With 1.4 million people, the numbers tend to add up pretty quickly. If those 1.4 million bank only Kshs 100 weekly the bank ends up with 140 million weekly. We all know that hardly anybody banks Kshs 500 let alone 100 bob. I was quite taken back by some of the truly amazing figures I saw.

In other words, one does not need to be a banking treasury expert to tell that this bank is not collapsing any time soon.

I was rather fascinated by the secret strategy that the bank used to get where it is today, which is incidentally still being used. Many of the account holders started off using the bank as their clearing to collect their salaries or for the purposes of banking their salary cheques. The bank would have staff go from office to office and door to door trying to sign up accounts for salaries. Now the problem that many bigger banks used to have was that people would always have to wait until their salary cheques cleared. Or you would have to kneel before an arrogant bank amanger just to be advanced a paltry amount against your salary chque which you have been bringing to the same bank for years. But at Equity you would take your salary cheque and they would quickly pay you against it (after confirming a few things first, of course). This little seemingly unimportant detail has won the banks hundreds of thousands of accounts. And when you really think about it, there was almost zero risk for the bank because they were simply discounting salary cheques and in effect lending you money for a few days in return for a small fee and you being grateful to them for life. Incidentally the bank still has its' people going round recruiting accounts, something other banks are only just now beginning to catch up to.

Some of you folks may be reading this and wondering what the fuss was all about. Actually you have to be a small man earning a small cheque with no friends in high places in Kenya to understand how revolutionary this small detail appeared to millions of ordinary folks.

What Are The Weaknesses Of Equity Bank?

I did find the inevitable warts in this star player of a bank.

Top on the list of its' weaknesses emerges from the style of management. The tight-control-one-man show that built the institution from nothing (actually Equity missed being put under receivership by a whisker—but I'll explain that story in a minute) to what it is today is still very much in place.

This is not the place where staff can share ideas and suggest things. Everybody knows that doing so is way too dangerous. That is how such talented members of staff like Kariuki Nguru and more recently, Joyce Sang lost their jobs. The way to keep your job at Equity is to do exactly as you are told and to oil the right egos frequently enough. This is more than a little dangerous for an institution that has reached the size that Equity Bank has.

It is instructive that this was the same problem that Uchumi Supermarkets had. The dukawalla management style of former CEO Suresh Shah was good for raking in the profits but skills were hardly passed on down to lower cadre workers. Interestingly this is something that Nakumatt Supermarkets have managed to do rather successfully and it augurs well for their future.

Increasingly other banks like Barclays and Standard Chartered have started showing immense interest in Equity Bank staff and are more willing to offer better pay packages and working conditions which a number of Equity employees have already quickly accepted. The question is what will be the long term impact of this on the performance of the bank? One thing is for sure, they will not come out of it unscathed.

Indeed it is a little surprising that CEO James Mwangi who is said to have learnt a lot from Alnoor Kassam's TradeBank did not learn Kassam's human resources motivational secrets, or rather decided to ignore them. Many Kenyans think of TradeBank as the failed bank but the truth is that only a huge loan that a prominent politician refused to pay brought down this very innovative bank. Employee of the month programs where ordinary low cadre employees would win huge cash prizes was just one of the things Kassam put into place to build a staff team that helped him churn profits at a dizzying rate.

=========================================

One sign that Equity's Mwangi has very different views about human resources is the story behind the low interest loans given to staff to purchase Equity Bank shares. It is said that the move was mainly done to technically disqualify staff members from joining any workers' union you don't want to join a union against a company where you are a shareholder do you? Of course the deal also had the usual stringent requirements, in the case of Equity, the staff members cannot sell off the shares for 5 years.

This attitude deep within Equity Bank management is not unusual in a country where there is such a huge unemployment problem as in Kenya today, mainly because it is very easy to replace disgruntled and non-performing employees. However it is the sort of thing that inevitably comes back to haunt an organization sooner or later.

The anti-Equity emails mention the banks involvement with government. With the recent history where banks that have gotten too close with government have ended up in trouble, this statement on its' own has no doubt made many Kenyans nervous. The list of casualties is way too long and includes TradeBank and Trust Bank to name two prominent examples.

It has even been suggested that this is more of a tribal thing than anything. What those who have been spreading these rumours have conveniently forgotten to mention is the bank's close association with dozens of NGO's and United Nations bodies who admire its' amazing business model and the fact that it is the largest lender in the region to low income individuals and small often informal enterprises. Naturally many of these organizations have found Equity, with its' mission statement of being a micr0 financier, the best partner to work with. Even Bill Gates is working with the bank on a number of his projects.

With this kind of attention, the government would have to pay attention to the bank and would also be easily convinced to channel funds for programmes through the organization irrespective of the tribes that most of the top management belong to.

I am convinced this is a very sad case of where politics has reared its' ugly head on such a successful and genuinely well run financial institution.

Who Is Behind the Emails And Rumors Against Equity Bank?

It is not too difficult to figure out who is behind the nasty anti-Equity emails because the bank's enemies are well known.

In the days of TradeBank several big banks spread many nasty runours against TradeBank and the fact that the bank ended up being closed laid credence to a lot of the rubbish they were talking under the table.

There have even been cases where fights have almost broken out in the field between employees of banks like Barclays and Equity.

The truth is that the big foreign banks in Kenya believe that Equity have taken away their clients (whom they consider their birth right). The reality is a little different. Once upon a time big banks in Kenya were getting pretty fat on high interest government treasury bills that were at one point paying out close to 80 per cent interest that they decided they did not want to bother with small accounts. This was around 1992 the year when Equity missed receivership by a whisker. It was quickly decided that the then building society change its focus from mortgages to banking services to meet the needs of many Kenyans who had resorted to putting their cash under pillows after all the big banks went on a campaign to close small accounts. What followed is the staff of legend at the bank. It is said that many customers came to Equity with their paltry cash while crying after the harsh words arrogant managers ate banks like Barclays and Standard had shouted at them. The rest as they is history.

Today when the high interest treasury bills are no more and the business environment has changed so that the money (and growth opportunities) are again with the masses, Barclays and Standard have come back with hat in hand to the same depositers they sent away with tears. Many of them have the memories still fresh on their minds and are not playing ball. This has upset many senior managers at these foreign banks.

Then there is the fierce rivalry Equity has with banks like Family Finance. Have you wondered why Equity does not have any branches in places like Limuru and indeed most of Kiambu?

Kenyans should join hands in exposing the malicious and selfish people forwarding the emails full of false accusations against Equity. The really sad thing here is that a rumour is enough on its' won to bring down a bank and that is exactly what somebody is trying to do here.

From the harsh comment I received in this blog from somebody asking me to "stick to political rumour-mongering" and leave banking to experts, I immediately got suspicious and my research has confirmed most of my suspicions. I am well aware that there is a lot of anti-Kikuyu sentiment out there, but this once let's spare this excellent local company. Do we want to forever remain without strong local banks in Kenya just because some foreign banks think that they have some birth right to Kenyan customers?

Brand New GTV Outfoxes DSTV

Kenyans are crazy about English soccer and especially the ongoing premiership. This is the reason why South African based DSTV has until now had such a huge subscriber base. That subscriber base now looks like it is going to disappear literally overnight.

The reason is simple. GTV, a brand new satellite TV outfit with strong links in Britain has won the rights to transmit 80% of the matches live. DSTV have only managed 20% and so far most of the matches they have transmitted don’t involve the big “four”. Kumekucha is reliably informed that already dishes with the “G” logo are now coming up in Nairobi, Mombasa and elsewhere at a rate that suggests there is no tomorrow. Most of these new customers were previously DSTV clients.

For a long time now DSTV has ruled pay Television in Africa—and especially East Africa, totally unchallenged, but now, it seems the hour of reckoning has arrived.

DSTV’s woes don’t end in Kenya. GTV are also in neighboring Tanzania where if Kenyans are soccer crazy then Tanzanians can only be described as totally soccer insane. And because of the very poor quality of local TV stations in Tanzania as opposed to Kenya, DSTV have many more subscribers there so much so that they have never bothered to introduce an equivalent of the cheaper KShs 2,000 packages there.

Murder Most Foul In Mombasa: Unfaithful Kisauni Wife Makes Love One Last Time As Assassins Watch

The crime rate in Mombasa is generally very low, so when a gruesome crime happens, the impact it leaves is felt for many months and even years.

I have recently come across some interesting, albeit bizarre information on a murder committed in Kisauni Mombasa. This is the old constituency of the late Karisa Maitha and the current legislator is Hassan Ali Joho of ODM.

The crime was in fact a murder that shocked the surrounding community and left many puzzling questions unanswered and the residents terrified.

One of the things about Mombasa is that it is very difficult to keep secrets. Sooner or later somebody will talk too much while taking some mnazi (traditional brew) and the story will always come out.

The murdered man worked at the Mombasa Port, where even children in Mombasa know, there is a lot of money. It is said that even the cleaners and watchmen find a way to demand bribes and end up going home every day with lots of cash in their pockets.

The young man was not married and soon hit it off with a housewife who was a neighbor in the plot where he lived in Kisauni. His friends and neighbors warned the young man several times that he should move out of the area because his “bad habits” were now well known (I have already told you that there are no secrets in Mombasa).

The young man was blinded by the Kenya shillings he used to stuff his pockets with every day and ignored the warnings until finally word got to the woman’s husband. The good book says that the wrath of a husband whose wife has slept with somebody else cannot be quenched, even by cash. How true. But in this case, to make matters worse, the woman’s husband was suffering an extreme bout of lack of Kenya shillings. Naturally this made him even more bitter. Somehow he borrowed enough money from an unknown source and hired some locals to get rid of his wife’s lover.

The trap that was laid with the husband’s blessings is what I call bizarre.

The unfaithful wife was forced to lure the man into a trap. There is a thick bush somewhere near Mtopanga estate within the sprawling Kisauni area. The woman called her lover on the mobile one night and asked him to meet her there. The man must have really thought that his lover was getting really kinky. And true enough when the man arrived, they moved deeper into the dark bushes and made love. Unknown to the man, the assassins were watching everything from a strategic point. They were even kind enough to allow the man to finish what he was doing.

They then swiftly emerged from the shadows and surrounded him. They casually told him to say his last prayers because apende, asipende, he was about to meet his creator. The young man thought they were joking. They then informed him quietly that the reason he was dying was because he was “eating in somebody else’s “pot” and the owner of that “pot” was very upset.

They moved quickly and with hands firmly over his mouth to prevent him from screaming they plunged knives into him several times and at times twisting it when it was inside his body. When the assassins were sure that he was beyond repair, they disappeared into the shadows with the wife of the man who had put out the contract.

The next morning residents of Mtopanga estate were shocked to find a very bloody scene and a dead body. There was a lot of fear in the area for weeks on end because residents thought a mugger and serial killer had moved into the area and for a long time people did not come home late without plenty of “security.”

None of the residents noticed an all important clue. The murdered man’s mobile pone and wallet full of cash were recovered from the scene; the assassins did not touch them.

This incident happened about 2 years ago.

Yet Another Tribal Chief Calls For Strategy Meeting

Suggests Kumekucha should be meeting place

They say it is never a good idea to reveal your weaknesses to the public, especially when you know that your enemies are clearly waiting with baited breath for you to make a mistake.

Most Kenyans for instance believe that the majority of people leaving comments in Kumekucha do so from cyber cafes and therefore the survey findings (some of which I shared and a lot of which I kept to myself) were “cooked”. Somebody (notice how the thinking is so similar amongst these NSIS guys) suggested that they will vote with their feet. For your information brother, your comments have no impact on the silent majority and if you know the first thing about how sites get most of their traffic, you would realize the kind of ignorance your comment reveals about you.

Actually the truth is that most of our commentators currently post comments from their work places (and an increasing number occasional from mobile phones—but still very few), therefore somebody leaving a comment from a cyber already gets your attention and from what they say in their comment it is very easy to tell whether it is their employer they were scared of or they had other motives (mostly to ensure that Kumekucha influence is limited). Mercifully it is obvious that the NSIS really needs to brush up on their IT and Internet knowledge. Half of them believe that tracing ip addresses is impossible even after I traced the ip address of the porn poster (with a little help).

Be warned enemies of Kumekucha, this blogger knows a thing or two about the web that it seems those who want to do harm don’t know yet.

Anyway let me reveal my weakness.

I have been seething with rage most of the day. So much so that my hands could hardly fly across the keyboard to do some stories. While seething I have been thinking very hard on how best to frustrate the tribal chiefs.

The solution is actually very simple.

We should all just go tribal.

And we should stick to the only 2 genuine bonafide tribes that exist in Kenya today namely;

1) The Haves
2) The Have Nots

Members of the second tribe should wake up and realize that we have been used as pawns for too long and we should vote as a block. I am calling a meeting soon here in Kumekucha for all members of this tribe so that we can map out our strategy on how the community can be in the next government. Our tribe must be in the next government if Kenya is to be saved.

“The Whole World Has Been Waiting For Kalonzo Musyoka,” Kalonzo Says

I am seeking guidance and advice so that I understand the above statement made by a leading presidential candidate recently. I have agonized using my limited knowledge of the English language and I still can’t make any sense out of it. Maybe Vikiii can help me.

Here is that statement again;

“The Whole World Has Been Waiting For Kalonzo Musyoka,”

What did mheshimiwa really mean by this statement? Which world was he referring to? The statement was made in Ukambani, does this offer any clues?

Questions, questions.

RECREATING THE REPUBLIC: The Challenges Facing Young Kenyans

"But to get to our Land of Promise, there is a wilderness we must cross and there are giants we must slay."

Closing Address delivered at the 3rd National Youth Convention Kenyatta International Conference Centre Sunday, 12th August 2007

By NJONJO MUE Senior Legal Counsel
and Head of the Advocacy Programme Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.

Distinguished delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen: I would like to congratulate you on the successful conclusion of the Third National Youth Convention.

Over the last two days, you have had occasion to discuss and debate the future of our country and the critical role that Kenya’s young people must play in reclaiming the fortunes of our land. Unfortunately, I was not able to join you until this afternoon, but going by what I have observed and heard in the short time I have been present, I know I can rest assured that the future of our country is in safe hands. Indeed, when I go to bed tonight, I shall be able to close my eyes and rest. I know

I can afford to dream of the country that my children will call home. Through the watches of the night, I will behold in my mind’s eye, a strong African country, united in its diversity with a vibrant economy and equitable distribution of resources; where every man, woman and child has the opportunity and the means to achieve his or her fullest potential and where justice and respect for human dignity shall be the basis of social behavior by both the citizen and the State alike.

I can already see a strong, united country, taking its place of leadership in regional and international affairs; setting the pace in political governance, economic growth, foreign policy, science and technology, and promoting fair trade. I see a green land where people are able to feed themselves, enjoying the fruits of the land while protecting the environment in the true realization of the fact that “we did not inherit this land from our parents; we have borrowed it from our children.” From Lamu to Lokichogio, from the Lake the blue shining sea, I behold all the peoples of this beloved country, in their different hues and colours living and working together side by side in mutually reinforcing and affirming communities across the land.

I see a land where justice is truly our shield and defender; where we shall resolve our disputes peacefully without resorting to violence. Where brother shall no longer hurt brother, nor a man lift his hand to strike his wife. Children shall play together in safety and shall have all the means to grow strong in mind, body and character, to become the men and women who will diligently apply their time, treasure and talent to serve their communities and their country faithfully.
But to get to our Land of Promise, there is a wilderness we must cross and there are giants we must slay.

==========================================

The picture of now is not altogether an encouraging one. Over the last few days, you have dissected the problems confronting us; challenges to our nationhood that threaten to rip our social fabric apart, including poverty, unemployment, insecurity, inequality, domestic violence, drugs and alcoholism, negative ethnicity and corruption. We have spoken ourselves hoarse about these giants in the past, so I shall not belabour the point here. Suffice it to say that it is time to move beyond the rhetoric to providing practical solutions.

A scene from the South African movie, Sarafina, comes to mind. Sarafina’s teacher, Mrs. Masumbuga, is discussing Sarafina’s idea for the school play. Referring to the still incarcerated Nelson Mandela, she says to Sarafina, “I like your idea for the school play… the prison gate swings wide open and the prisoner walks free…” after she allows herself a few moments of pause to savour the imaginary scene she comes back to reality, “… and then what?”

The history of our struggles in Kenya is a history of aborted revolutions primarily because we did not bother to ask and answer the question, “… and then what?” In 2002, the country united to remove an unpopular government. We all joined together in the new unofficial national anthem, “Yote yawezekana!” But because we did not pause to ask ourselves “… and then what?” as soon as the common enemy was defeated, we turned on each other and spent the next five years hurling insults on one another and emerged even more divided than we were when we embarked on this leg along the troubled journey to true nationhood. Kenya’s young leaders must avoid this mistake. We must have an agenda that goes beyond merely replacing the old guard.

I do not have answers for you, but some of the questions that we must ask ourselves include the following:

Our population is projected to rise to 60 million by 2030. 60% of these people will live in urban areas. How do we face the challenges of providing food, health, housing, security, education, sanitation and other social services? Are we prepared to introduce new thinking to tackling the challenges of modernity or are we going to stand by and watch as our towns and cities continue to become one big slum? What demands are we making on government to provide affordable services to its people in a sustainable way?

A recent survey shows that the majority of our young people dream of living in urban areas and of working in sectors other than agriculture. What are we doing to prepare to meet this challenge, by changing mindsets, making agriculture more attractive and building the skills and capacity of our young people to face the challenges of living in a globalized world? Another recent survey in Kabete and Gachoka constituencies indicate that young men are dropping out of school at alarming rates to engage in crime, miraa trade and drug trafficking. This has led to an imminent mental health crisis which is threatening to reverse the few gains made in development. In the cities - and among us here - alcohol has become the silent killer of our hopes and quiet stealer of our dreams. The problem of alcoholism and drug abuse has reached epidemic proportions as are the associated vices of violence, prostitution, gambling and pornography. These are challenges that especially face young people and if we are to safeguard our dream of recreating our republic, we must become our brothers’ and sisters’ keeper by holding one another accountable as to how we are individually safeguarding our dream by taking care of our own mental and physical health.

Having listened to some of the discourse this afternoon, I have to admit that I am a bit disturbed about the seeming obsession with power and position. While power is important because when properly used it enables us to proffer our point of view in the competitive marketplace of ideas and to implement progressive policies, there is need to point out that leadership is not just about position; it is about influence.

It would be a pity if we as young leaders waited until we become MPs or councilors before making a contribution. Each of us here is in a position to influence one or two people on a daily basis towards the direction we want our country to go in the project of recreating our republic. What’s more, there are countless opportunities to engage the holders of power and duty-bearers at local levels in creative ways of holding them to account for the way they exercise this power. In particular, there
currently exist gaps in the way devolved funds such as CDF and LATF are used and accounted for, and it behooves us to offer leadership to our communities in auditing how these funds are used. And there are myriad opportunities to grow in leadership by offering ourselves to serve in those unsung positions such as the PTAs, school boards of governors, trade unions, estate and village security committees, cooperative societies, CBOs, and so on, where we can develop our leadership skills away from the pressure of the national limelight. We should shun the idea of parachuting from the blue and ending up in Parliament when we have never led anything in our lives and have absolutely no track record except the ability to align ourselves with a particular tribal chieftain and riding on the wave of euphoria thattends to precede our national elections.

Currently a lot of young people have allowed themselves to become frustrated and despondent. They are alienated from structural correctives that exist but are ignored or cynically manipulated by the powers that be. But there is hope yet. Speaking just about human rights, there is a lot of machinery in place, nationally and internationally, for the promotion and protection of human rights which we can use to place our society on an irreversible trajectory towards becoming a human rights State – a State that not only respects human rights, but also upholds the right to be human. Kenya is a signatory to most major human rights treaties and the State is beginning to respond to pressure to be accountable to various mechanisms set under these treaties. But more remains to be done. There is need to push for the ratification of several protocols such as the African protocol on the rights of women.

Further, despite the alienation and despair that we sometimes feel as young people, times are changing. More and more, young persons are occupying key positions in
government, business and civil society. The youth are not short of role models. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights is an example of one institution that is led by young persons virtually from top to bottom, and is at the forefront of challenging old paradigms. While youth representation, especially in politics, is not what it should be, I invite young people represented at this Convention to participate in those structural correctives which are available to them, such as KNCHR. Your participation in these processes should not be seen as an alternative to the various ways in which you are already agitating for change, but as additional tools. You should feel free to engage with us and to share your concerns because your concerns contain crucial information that may not otherwise reach us and therefore become part of the workings of these structural correctives. Your voice should also be heard in challenging those elements of the political class that oppose the Commission’s efforts to hold them and the State accountable.

Finally, as we position ourselves to address the challenges of the future and as
we make our case for seeking positions of influence, we must ask ourselves, what is the sense of value that is driving our wanting to get into power? Leadership should be about more than just capturing seats. How have we been preparing ourselves to be that quality leader when the time comes? The late freedom fighter, Bildard Kaggia, is reported to have dismissed two young activists who visited him in his twilight years, seeking to know how they could contribute to the achievement of the Mau Mau dream. Said he, “Nyinyi hamna maana (you people are useless). You like good suits and you like seeking high positions regardless of what those positions do to your people. There is nothing you can do.”

This is a sad indictment of our generation, and coming from a veteran of the struggle for independence, it cannot be ignored. It is sadly the case that the Kenyan middle class seems obsessed with flashy cars, the latest models of cell phones and foreign football teams, instead of finding ways of giving leadership on the critical issues of our day. We have come to define the Kenyan dream as comprising a 1,2,3,4 lifestyle: 1 spouse, 2 children, a 3 bedroom house and a 4x4 car. As long as I can have and maintain these for my own nuclear family, the rest of the country can take care of itself. Our booming economy is characterized by ubiquitous developments of serviced apartments in up market suburbs whose key selling point, apart from the swimming pool, barbecue area and gym, is the ultramodern security system complete with electric fencing, controlled entry and exit, 24 hour patrols and CCTV cameras. Am I the only one who wonders for how long these high walls we are building around us will keep the people of Kibera, Mathare, Kawangware and Korogocho at bay? Might the Good Book have a point when it cautions us that ‘He who builds a high wall invites destruction’?

This brings me back to the question of values. As we confront the challenges
of the future and position our country to be a leader not only in the region but also in the world, I hasten to point out that we will not get to the Promised Land if half of us are fettered and half of us are free.

We need to shift decisively from a world where a small minority lord it over the
majority. Many of us here are privileged in many ways; we must bring the rest of our sisters and brothers with us. For as Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us long ago, none of us is free until all of us are free. The values that should drive the image of Kenya’s future that I described at the beginning of this address are the same values that inspired our forefathers and mothers when they took up home-made guns half a century ago in a blatantly unequal contest to shout from the rooftops that they too were created in the image of God. They are the values of dignity, justice, honesty, integrity and hard work. They are the values of humility and mutual respect and the equitable distribution of the burdens and the benefits of belonging. Our struggle must be anchored on the desire to build a society that celebrates its strong while taking care of its weak; where hard work is rewarded and crime is duly punished, no matter the social status of the criminal. A country that is bound together by its strong faith in God and the inalienable pride of being proudly African….

As we aspire to transform our country into a heritage of splendor, and as we continue to confront the challenges facing our young democracy, we as young leaders have a critical role to play. We must be prepared to march out in front when the majority prefers the comfort of the ranks.

Our leadership must become the voice of a new generation of Kenyans, which are emerging to answer new historical challenges; the voice of young men and women who will define themselves as leaders by their capacity to identify the issues that unite us as a nation. These are the true patriots who will raise the banner of Kenya and bid us to confidently follow, as we march together into the future, proud and united, one nation under God. I thank you.

Tribal Chiefs Shine As They Consolidate Their Positions: Only Divine Intervention Can Save Kenya From These Hyenas

Political temperatures in the country have risen considerably. Tribal chiefs have come out with both barrels blazing and each region is now strategizing on how best to come out ahead of the other.

So where does Kenya feature in all this? Stupid question you ask. Kenya features nowhere. You think Kenya is more important that individual tribal and regional interests? You must be out of your mind.

The Luhya community (all legislators from Western province) had a meeting yesterday where they announced that they will only support ODM if Musalia "Goldenberg" Mudavadi is declared the party's presidential candidate. They emphasized that any other candidate being selected would force the community to reconsider its' options. We all know who the ODM presidential candidate is don't we. One Raila Amollo Odinga, who by the way is yet to reply to Kiunjuri's accusations in parliament about oil deals and missing files.

The pronouncement by the Luhya community is interesting because as I have said here before, o such community exists and this is why the much-hyped Luyha unity will never happened. What we have here is an administrative bloc created by the colonial government that is a collection of numerous different tribes many of who are too different from each other to even speak in a language that the other understands.

Rift Valley MPs also had their meeting where all the warring factions came together two days ago. William "YK92" Ruto sat on the same table as Nicholas "Ouko murder suspect" Biwott. Biwott has been quoted as saying in the recent past that the community will do everything to ensure that they are a part of the next government. Incidentally everybody is assuming that Kanu will support President Kibaki, but I have this feeling that they will swing a nasty surprise for the incumbent.

The Kamba community does not need a meeting for all to see the direction they are headed under the leadership of one Kalonzo Musyoka. Neither do the Kikuyu or Luo communities need to meet for political analysts to know what is going on.

Yes, the tribal chiefs are circling like vultures watching and waiting as a man breathes his last. Only divine intervention can save Kenya from these vultures or hyenas—if you are a fan of Gado's cartoons.

How Kenya Treats Her Real Heroes And Heroines With Contempt

It must have been quite a sight witnessing the hanging of one Dedan Kimathi at Kamiti Maximum Security prison in 1952. I can imagine those penetrating eyes staring as if at nothing. Even as the heavy hood was thrown over his face and the rope fastened. When the trap door is opened what is supposed to happen is that the neck breaks, but death rarely comes quickly in hanging. People often urinate and pass feaces before the legs begin to jerk and kick incessantly signifying that death is close.

Kimathi's only regret was probably the fact that he did not have the opportunity when dieing to clasp the soil and speak those famous words in Kikuyu signifying what that it was for the soil that belonged to them that they had died.

Brave man, this guy although he was not fighting for independence. He was fighting for the land taken away by the colonialists to be restored to its; rightful owners. Still, there is no doubt that the Mau Mau uprising was very effective in attracting attention to the plight of the majority indigenous African Kenyan. This alone classifies Kimathi a true Kenyan hero.

It would take over 50 years for Dedan Kimathi to be honored. But with what? A statue on Kenyatta Avenue, that KJ of Redikulas fame says scares tourists?

JM Kariuki braved some unimaginable conditions in colonial concentration camps. Amazingly his spirit was never broken. He survived and that story should have ended up as most fairy tales do with the word "and they lived happily ever after" because at independence he was appointed press secretary to Jomo Kenyatta. Instead the man who survived death by a whisker in the hands of the ruthless colonialists ended up being felled by his very own people. To date few Kenyans know anything about the contributions JM made to Kenya and probably the majority are saying what was said here recently by a reader about a national hero; he said "I would care less to find out" or something along those lines.

It is really amazing how a nobody called Thomas Odhiambo, born one evening to an illiterate sisal picker from Rusinga Island at the Kilimabogo sisal plantation (near Thika) and with very little formal education ended up being a masterful negotiator who almost single handedly delivered independence for Kenya. His very effective strategy was to negotiate for what he could get immediately and then before the ink even dried on the signed agreement he would immediately embark on a new campaign to ask for even more. That is how the country swiftly moved from 8 indigenous African representatives in the Legco in 1957 to 16 and then to independence much more quickly than anybody had expected. Thomas could speak several local languages. He learnt Kikamba first because that was the dominant tribe in Kilimabogo where he was born, then at Jeanes School he learnt fluent Kikuyu. A brief stint later in Tanzania enabled him to pick up fluent Kiswahili. But when the country finally attained her independence, he became an obstacle to those who wanted to make fantastic riches at the expense of the masses so on one afternoon in broad daylight, he stopped two bullets outside a chemist on what is now Moi Avenue in Nairobi. To date the British and Americans and even an Australian political scientist have done a much better job at recognizing this man as a national hero. Kenyans to date don't care. By the way this man Thomas Odhiambo is better known to Kenyans as Tom Mboya.

Kenneth Matiba was in perfectly good health and was said to be as fit as a fiddle when he launched a campaign against the single party dictatorship of Kanu in the late 80s with Charles Rubia. Today Kenyans enjoy much more democratic space but Matiba is virtually a cripple and his once prosperous empire is struggling for survival. Kenyans would care less, let alone want to honor this true Kenyan hero who risked all so that we could all have a better life.

There is yet another prominent politician who when detained by the Moi government and came out to find that his wife had already been taken over by somebody else, which was just as well because while in detention the authorities wiped out his manhood forever. That is how much sacrifice this Kenyan man has given, but do you think Kenyans care?

There are many other names like Wangari Maathai, Kungu Karumba, Gama Pinto, James Orengo, Martin Shikuku and more recently John Githongo. Selfless Kenyans who put their lives on the line.

But not only do Kenyans care less but they have tended to hand over the presidency to anybody but their heroes. Jomo Kenyatta walked out from detention to have the presidency handed to him on silver platter by others who risked more. Daniel Moi, a collaborator with the local colonial government before independence became the second president of Kenya. Mwai Kibaki a well established fence-seater of many years who had remained mum at crucial points in our history was handed the president on a silver platter at Uhuru Park to become Kenya's third president.

Meanwhile our heroes and heroines continue to linger in obscurity. Is it any wonder that those we have settled on who mostly did not know the pain, ended up being selfish grabbers who were out to greatly enrich themselves at the expense of the masses?

9th Parliament Does Not Like Women

The message is loud and clear.

The 9th parliament does not think much of women and do not want more women in parliament. They probably believe that they have nothing to contribute.

I say this because, if they were sensitive, they would have made every effort to have the bill adjusted so that the 40 new constituencies, which they were against could be removed and the new seats fro women remain. Instead this bone of contention was used as en excuse to throw out a bill that would have had far-reaching effect and very positive impact on the country.

This whole episode has made nominated legislator Njoki Ndungu look a real heroine to have gotten her Sexual Offences Bill passed. But just look at the hard work she put in?

She organized seminars for MPs and basically did everything to cajole, beg and so on to get the 9th parliament to pass the land mark legislation that is still having problems being enforced.

At the end of the day, the passing of this law is the only positive achievement of the 9th parliament that I can think of. Sadly even that has been wiped out by the brutal way in which the dream of having 50 seats was wiped out in one short afternoon session.

The message to voters should be very clear. The only verdict they can pass is guilty as charged and the only course of action is to vote out the entire 9th parliament. That is if we plan on getting those extra seats for women early in the life of the 10th parliament.

Incidentally I have just received a message from a friend via sms that puts the sentiments of many Kenyans into words (this guy obviously doesn't read Kumekucha too frequently). He says;

"The men MPs don't want women in parliament, please start a campaign against MPs in the 9th parliament."

Leave a comment now at the site campaigning for the whole 9th parliament to be voted OUT.

Uganda Attacks Kenya With Tanks, Helicopters And Foot Soldiers

The Ugandan army (UPDF) recently crossed into the country in Pokot complete with military tanks and helicopters and made away with large herds of cattle.

The defense minister's only comment; "We are talking."

My question is; talk about what?

When a neighboring country crosses the border with tanks and helicopters to attack a small village of unarmed Kenyans, is the thing to do, talk?

Isn't the right action to ask them to give a good reason why we should not send our military complete with helicopters into their country to recover the said cattle. And such a message is not delivered in talks, it is sent as an ultimatum. Or even better declare war based on this act of extreme provocation?

Will somebody tell me what is going on and what the said talks are about?

Is the Kenyan government now unable to protect it's own people from hostilities from outside the country?

Just ask yourself the question; why should the Ugandan military cross the border with Tanks and military helicopters armed to the teeth, not to mention foot soldiers? The clear message is that they were ready to meet with any type of resistance. This is something that the president himself needs to explain to Kenyans.

When The CEO Personally Appears In A Commercial It Usually Means Trouble

All over the world, whenever you see the CEO of a company appear in his own TV commercials, trying to sell products, then you know that all is NOT well. Lee Iacooca appeared in the Chrysler ads when the car maker was in serious trouble and as he attempted to turn it around.

In the latest ads being run by Uchumi Supermarkets (I doubt whether they will cause anybody to have any confidence in Uchumi) the CEO appears himself and even talks. The difference between Chrysler and Uchumi is that the latter does not have any viable turn around strategy apart from wanting to raise more money to help the management team make the same mistakes their predecessors who failed, made. This is probably the clearest sign yet, to the public that all is not well once again at Kenya's oldest supermarket chain.

In retrospect what went wrong with this turn around effort was that politics was allowed to have an upper hand where very serious commercial, business decisions were required. It is now crystal clear for all to see that the management team in place at Uchumi does not have what it takes to turn around the supermarket chain.

When you think of the poor Kenyans who were forced out of a job and are now suffering, it is easy to get very annoyed at what has taken place at Uchumi. It is a big shame that after all the support that they have received from the government, suppliers and even Kenyans, that this ship has just sunk deeper.

Are You Scared For Your Life Leaving Comments At Kumekucha?

A recent survey I have just completed carrying out has given me results that have completely taken me by surprise. They reveal that many people who read Kumekucha believe that associating themselves with the blog endangers their lives at worst and can get them in big trouble and behind bars at the very least.

The words of one respondent are still ringing in my ears;

"I always look over my shoulder imagining that some guys in suits will burst into the room the next minute and arrest me. The information you reveal here is just too dangerous."

It seems that a whooping 70 per cent of the people who regularly visit Kumekucha are too frightened to leave a comment because they are aware that ip addresses can very easily be traced.

Even more interesting is the fact that even some Kenyans in the diasporas fear to be associated with Kumekucha because they will have to return home at some point.

One advertiser who left their mobile telephone number in an advertisement by mistake pleaded with me to delete it immediately.

So is all this fear justified?

Absolutely not. If Kumekucha plans to revel his true identity to all and sundry soon, then it must be surely safe. Although there are people who already know my true identity already.

Then there is the fact that if everybody who read Kumekucha were to be traced and put behind bars it would mean arresting tens of thousands of Kenyans all over the world. In fact it would cripple media houses in Kenya because most of the newsrooms at Nation and Standard amongst other media would end up behind bars.

It is clear that the years of Nyayo House torture chambers and detention without trial, not to mention people disappearing in Ngong Forest have taken their toll on many Kenyans. We will need to rise above these fears if we stand any chance of taking our country back.

It is apt to leave you with this lesson from how they train elephants for the circus.

When they are young they are tied to a stake that is then hammered firmly to the ground. When the elephant is young it tries all it can to get away and is unable to. But guess what, when it grows older and stronger, it still believes that it is not worth pulling at the stake, after all it never worked all the years, why should it work now. And yet by this time a simple yank from the elephant would free it.

Ukweli Sasa!!

P.S. My research also showed that at least 40 per cent of the people leaving comments could be government agents, including some very popular well known commentator or two. This explains the low quality of debate, especially on issues that are sensitive to the government.

Government Receives Resounding Defeat In New Constituencies Bill

But What About The 50 Seats For Women?

The fact that the government of national unity had a closed-door meeting immediately after receiving a terrible defeat in a crucial bill that was supposed to pave way for the addition of new constituencies speaks volumes.

It confirms that the new constituencies (40 had been planned) were a crucial part of President Kibaki's re-election plan. Remember Hon Martha Karua's words at an unguarded moment, she said; "new constituencies are a must!"

It now emerges that the government's strategy was to sugar-coat the new constituencies bill with the rider of 50 new seats for women. It was a good idea on paper—the operative word here being "on paper." I keep on saying that politics is does not work with good on paper ideas and I keep asking who is the President's political strategist? Do they really know what they are doing?

The reasoning was that being so close to the polls MPs would not dare risk antagonizing the electorate by rejecting something as popular as 50 new seats in parliament for women. It was a terrible miscalculation. What made things even worse was the fact that the recently passed media bill had backfired so badly and painted the Kibaki administration in such poor light. MPs had just peered out of the house to see symbolically "gagged" journalists peacefully assembled outside the house. Then to add insult to injury the manner in which the bill had been rushed into the house without much thought being put into building a consensus. All this conspired to put most legislators in a very bad mood against the government side by the time the bill landed on the floor of the house.

So what are the repercussions?

It is clear that the President's re-election strategy has hit a snag. There is now no legal way to increase the constituencies before the elections. The intricate well-laid plans now need to be adjusted and I am sorry to say this, if it is the same team doing things, the opposition, divided or not have got absolutely nothing to worry about.

But to the legislators in the 9th parliament, they have given their challengers one more powerful campaign slogan. The parliament that rejected women.

Here are the "achievements" of the 9th parliament so far;

1) The parliament that passed unprecedented remuneration increases for MPs as well as perks, even as the rest of the country went through hardships and starvation.

2) The house that passed the ill-advised Media Bill with a killer clause designed to end press freedom in Kenya.

3) The House that rejected new seats for women.

4) The House with the worst attendance record for important debates, to date.

5) The house that covered up the findings of its' own select committee meant to probe the murder of former foreign affairs minister Dr Robert Ouko.

6) The house that had saunas and other luxuries installed for MPs which further made them inaccessible to the people who elected them because Kumekucha has ascertained that most of the time constituents are told their MP is not in, they are relaxing in the Sauna in their office complex in the former continental house. Etc. (space does not allow us to carry all the sins of the 9th parliament).

Dear Kenyans, let us do ourselves a big favor and vote the WHOLE LOT out in December.

Old Semi-Illiterate Miji Kenda Man Reveals New Evidence About Tom Mboya And Political Assassinations In Kenya

I recently met an old man from Mombasa who proudly kept on reminding me that he was from the Mijikenda community, the guys who never take things lying down. On discovering that I was doing some research on what kind of impact the issue of Tom Mboya's assassination would have on the electorate on the ground this December, he started telling me a very fascinating stuf.

He started by declaring that corruption WILL NEVER end in Kenya.

Why, I asked?

"Do you know a man called Murungaru?"

"The former Minister, now banned from enetering the UK?"

"Yes, that is the one. You know as late as 2002, I used to see the man frequently in Mombasa around the Pembe ya Ndovu (that is the important landmark of Elephant tasks along Moi Avenue in Mombasa) area. You know what he was doing? Hawking medicine to pharmacists. He was always sweating and wiping the sweat under his spectavles. Where is that man today? Is he still hawking dawa?"

"No," I replied totally fascinated and engrossed. "He is a very rich man."

"Since independence the government has gotten rid of anybody who has dared stand in the way of the corrupt ways of powerful individuals within those governments. The man you are talking about, was one of the first victims."

"Tom Mboya," I asked not quite understanding what he meant.

"Yes, Tom Mboya. The truth is that there was no good piece of land that Jomo Kenyatta saw that he did not grab for himself. I've heard some people say that he owns land the size of one province. That is a big lie. It has to be a minimum of 2 provinces at the very least. While the mzee grabbed the land, the other ministers also grabbed the left over land and whatever else they could get their hands on.

"The kitchen cabinet noticed that Tom Mboya was not grabbing anything, he remained clean. That was a big threat because they were only safe when all of them were in it together grabbing and stealing public property.

"Now you tell me. No matter how stupid you are, could you feel comfortable with such a person around?"

What the old man was saying was that as long as there are governments in Kenya, corruption will never end because government and top kitchen cabinet characters are the main source of mega-corruption.

I have thought long and hard about the words of that old semi-illiterate Miji Kenda man since we had that discussion some time back. I then asked myself the following questions.

Why did JM Kariuki die?

Answer: He said he did not want to see a Kenya with 10 millionaires and 10 million beggars. The 10 he meant were the kitchen cabinet and those close to the Kenyatta government. That was why he had to die.

Why did Robert Ouko die?

Answer: He was working on a dossier that detailed corruption in high places, precisely the same kitchen cabinet around the president, who at this time was Moi. Just like in Mboya's case, he made the other cabinet ministers nervous because he was clean. Tom Mboya and JM Kariuki were political heavyweights, Ouko was a political nobody in life but he still made the powers that be nervous because he did not touch corruption. So he had to die.

Why did John Githongo fear for his life and flee?

Answer: Because he refused to live a lie and when he discovered Anglo Leasing (carried out by the very same kitchen cabinet surrounding the president) and tried to expose it, he was a marked man and it was only a matter of time. He got away in the nick of time.

Conclusion: You cannot de-link political assassinations in Kenya from corruption. Look how rich those who got rid of Mboya are today. Even those who have died have left great fortunes behind for their families, enough to ensure that the next 10 generations of their families will never need to work again.

What's Really Going On At Equity Bank?

In my days as a journalist working for various publications, my specialty was business analysis and reporting. I have no problems reading a balance sheet (especially between the lines).

However the events of yesterday and today seem to suggest that I have gotten a little rusty. Some guy now says that I should stick to what I do best these days—political propaganda. That gave me a laugh because the man knows that if what I was carrying here was mere propaganda, this blog would not have half the audience that it does.

Anyway, I am not perfect and before I answer him and others in this blog, I will do some digging on Equity Bank and get back to all you good folks. My gut feeling is that this bank is still OK but let me gather the evidence and facts to back that, if any.

This is why a blog medium is such a wonderful new media tool. You can challenge and if the owner of the blog is a fair man, they will go back and do some more digging to prove or disapprove what you have said.

Believe me when I say that the way to really benefit from the information age is not too be too quick to be proved right. Stop. Think, do some more digging of your own (it is so easy on the net.) and then we you get back with your answer do not be afraid of admitting that you were wrong. In my book only real men have the balls to admit that they are wrong.

Have an inquisitive day will you.
