For Rigathi Gachagua, recent setbacks have forced him to reevaluate his options. After former president and Mount Kenya kingpin Uhuru Kenyatta rejected his advances, Gachagua has been left with no choice but to go back to the drawing boards.
So, what lies ahead for Gachagua and his political aspirations? Clearly, Gachagua's attempt to align himself with the influential former president seemed like a strategic move. But he himself burnt his bridges in his earlier rushed myopic approach of insulting the former head of state at every opportunity. And then he followed that up quickly by insulting influential Maina Njenga. Now Bwana Gachagua needs to get himself out of the ditch he jumped into so enthusiastically not too long ago. And he must do it fast.
With Uhuru Kenyatta's status as the Mount Kenya's political heavyweight, joining forces with him would have provided Gachagua with a significant advantage. However, despite his best efforts, Gachagua's advances were rejected, leaving him grasping for alternative options.
The Deputy President has no support base, either within his community or anywhere else in Kenya. And support bases are not built overnight.
...Which leaves him with only one possible, risky and deadly kamikaze option. Surely the mountain will catch fire sooner that anybody anticipated.
