At the ongoing 10th Devolution Conference in Eldoret, the US envoy to Kenya, Meg Whitman stirred a whirlpool of reactions with her remarks. What's all the fuss about, you may wonder? Well, her comments echoed those of President Ruto on a locally sensitive issue that is currently the subject of peace talks. These remarks, mirroring those of Ruto, have found little favour with the opposition and the vast majority of Kenyans who have their doubts about last year's polls. Although I was already a seasoned analyst then it still took me a few weeks to put it all together so as to understand what was really going on here. These foreigners were carefully analyzing and enhancing the image of candidate Uhuru Kenyatta for the presidency.

Post 2008 Uhuru Kenyatta was in the grand coalition government but was quietly putting together his presidential campaign for 2013. The nerve centre of his campaign was at the Chancery building. I got word about the setup which had intrigued many people who could not quite understand what it was.

There was a whole room filled with mostly white people staring into computer screens and TV monitors. Although I was already a seasoned analyst then it still took me a few weeks to put it all together so as to understand what was really going on here. These foreigners were carefully analyzing and enhancing the image of candidate Uhuru Kenyatta for the presidency. They collected carefully statistics of how many times he was mentioned on local and international media and listed those hits on two separate columns. One for positive mention and the other for negative.

But what we need to take away from it for our purposes for this book is that the work of those foreigners at The Chancery is what led to the next step that would not only propel candidate Uhuru to the presidency but introduce a nuisance factor into our political arena that lives on to this day.

Uhuru's call to Denis Itumbi, a then recent graduate of the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication, was placed at around this time. It marked a significant turn in Kenyan politics. The call was not just an invitation to Itumbi; it was the birth of digital politics in Kenya. The Kenyatta campaign was keen on leveraging the power of digital media to reach and engage voters effectively. However, the foreign campaign strategists lacked the local touch needed to connect with Kenyan voters authentically.

As a local himself, Itumbi understood the language, culture, and psyche of the people.
