At the ongoing 10th Devolution Conference in Eldoret, the US envoy to Kenya, Meg Whitman stirred a whirlpool of reactions with her remarks. What's all the fuss about, you may wonder? Well, her comments echoed those of President Ruto on a locally sensitive issue that is currently the subject of peace talks.
These remarks, mirroring those of Ruto, have found little favour with the opposition and the vast majority of Kenyans who have their doubts about last year's polls. What exactly is the role of an envoy? To take sides in a highly sensitive local political dispute?
An envoy, or a diplomatic representative, plays a crucial role in fostering relationships between countries. They are tasked with representing their government abroad, mediating in conflicts, and promoting their country's interests. Their duty is not just to echo the sentiments of their own leaders but to present an unbiased view that respects the local sentiments too.
But that was not the only drama coming out of Eldoret on the very same day. This is the same town that is home of the raging Finland/Canada airlift scholarship scandal and it was on this day that the Director of Public prosecutions approved the prosecution of former governor of Uasin Gishu county, Jackson Mandago and three other county officials headquartered in Eldoret. The emergence of Jackson Mandago's name as one of the possible persons of interest in the Finland Scholarship scam (after all he was governor when the scheme was launched) is bound to raise political temperatures considerably at a time when the Ruto administration is so shaky and under so much pressure.
Mandago finds himself in a vulnerable position due to his love-hate relationship with Ruto in the past opening the possibility of the president succumbing to pressure and throwing him under the bus. Candidate Uhuru Kenyatta's secret presidential campaign was many years ahead of its' time:
There was a whole room filled with mostly white people staring into computer screens and TV monitors. Although I was already a seasoned analyst then it still took me a few weeks to put it all together so as to understand what was really going on here. These foreigners were carefully analyzing and enhancing the image of candidate Uhuru Kenyatta for the presidency.
Post 2008 Uhuru Kenyatta was in the
grand coalition government but was quietly putting together his presidential campaign
for 2013. The nerve centre of his campaign was at the Chancery building. I got word
about the setup which had intrigued many people who could not quite understand
what it was.
There was a whole room filled with

was already a seasoned analyst then it still took me a few weeks to put it all
together so as to understand what was really going on here. These foreigners
were carefully analyzing and enhancing the image of candidate Uhuru Kenyatta
for the presidency. They collected carefully statistics of how many times he
was mentioned on local and international media and listed those hits on two separate
columns. One for positive mention and the other for negative.

It was a highly sophisticated
political approach at the time, many years ahead of its' time. But what we need
to take away from it for our purposes for this book is that the work of those
foreigners at The Chancery is what led to the next step that would not only
propel candidate Uhuru to the presidency but introduce a nuisance factor into
our political arena that lives on to this day.
Uhuru's call to Denis Itumbi, a then
recent graduate of the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication, was placed at
around this time. It marked a significant turn in Kenyan politics. The call was
not just an invitation to Itumbi; it was the birth of digital politics in
Kenya. The Kenyatta campaign was keen on leveraging the power of digital media
to reach and engage voters effectively. However, the foreign campaign
strategists lacked the local touch needed to connect with Kenyan voters
authentically.
The
Local Touch
That's where Itumbi came in. He was
tasked with the daunting responsibility of translating the digital strategy
into an approach that locals could relate to and understand. As a local
himself, Itumbi understood the language, culture, and psyche of the people. His
role was not just about translating the message; it was about conveying it in a
way that resonated with the people's hopes, fears, and aspirations.
The
Role of Prof Mutahi Ngunyi
In the midst of this digital
revolution in Kenyan politics, Prof Mutahi Ngunyi's role cannot be overlooked.
As a political analyst and strategist, Ngunyi's insights and expertise were
instrumental in shaping the digital strategy of Uhuru Kenyatta's campaign. But
more than that, Ngunyi understood the potential pitfalls and excesses of this
new approach.

Ngunyi influence on re-introduction of fuel subsidies: As we navigate the deep and tumultuous waters of Kenyan politics, a very unexpected development that is still difficult to believe has suddenly slapped us in the face. Over the past few months, we've seen President William Ruto vehemently rule out the remotest possibility of Uhuru Kenyatta's subsidies ever coming back. And then Wham!!! the fuel subsidy is back.
And some pundits believe that this latest manoeuvre is strikingly evocative of the counsel of Prof Mutahi "Rasputin" Ngunyi. But has the academic's advice truly begun to manifest in Ruto's political trajectory? And so immediately at that?
The relationship between Ruto and Ngunyi, renowned for his political analyses and predictions, is no secret. The good professor has been working at getting to Ruto's jugular. In fact, it's been fodder for political pundits and enthusiasts alike. But suddenly he announces that he has crossed over. And then he tells us what he would advise the President to do... and then we see Ruto do it.
Before we examine the specifics, it's important that we understand who Prof Mutahi "Rasputin" Ngunyi is and what his theories entail. Known for his provocative and often controversial views, Ngunyi is a force to reckon with in the political arena. His theories, often dubbed as 'Rasputin-esque', are a blend of political science, psychology, and philosophy, designed to provoke thought and inspire action.
So why should Kenyans be very, very afraid?
