At the ongoing 10th Devolution Conference in Eldoret, the US envoy to Kenya, Meg Whitman stirred a whirlpool of reactions with her remarks. What's all the fuss about, you may wonder? Well, her comments echoed those of President Ruto on a locally sensitive issue that is currently the subject of peace talks.
These remarks, mirroring those of Ruto, have found little favour with the opposition and the vast majority of Kenyans who have their doubts about last year's polls. What exactly is the role of an envoy? To take sides in a highly sensitive local political dispute?
An envoy, or a diplomatic representative, plays a crucial role in fostering relationships between countries. They are tasked with representing their government abroad, mediating in conflicts, and promoting their country's interests. Their duty is not just to echo the sentiments of their own leaders but to present an unbiased view that respects the local sentiments too.
But that was not the only drama coming out of Eldoret on the very same day. This is the same town that is home of the raging Finland/Canada airlift scholarship scandal and it was on this day that the Director of Public prosecutions approved the prosecution of former governor of Uasin Gishu county, Jackson Mandago and three other county officials headquartered in Eldoret.
